The Challenge

Strategic decisions are only as good as the intelligence behind them.

Most available intelligence fails on three fundamental counts.

Opinion over measurement

Qualitative narratives that can't be validated, compared, or tracked over time.

Snapshots without trajectory

Knowing where a country stands today tells you nothing about where it's heading.

Fragmented indicators

GDP here, infrastructure there, innovation somewhere else — no integrated view of capability.

The cost? Mispriced investments. Fragile supply chains. Strategic blind spots.

The Framework

A dual-index system for complete strategic visibility.

Every country tells two stories: where it stands and where it's heading. The GPI 4.0 captures both through a dual-index architecture.

📍

Standardised Level Index

Where does this country stand today?

Measures: Current capability across all dimensions

Insight: Absolute position and relative ranking

📈

Growth Index

Where is this country heading?

Measures: Rate of change and trajectory

Insight: Momentum, acceleration, or decline

Why Both Matter

Country X scores high on Level but negative on Growth — established capability, eroding trajectory. Country Y scores lower on Level but high on Growth — building rapidly. Same ranking, opposite strategic implications.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

The Global Power Index (GPI) is a quantitative framework that measures national capability across 194 countries. It synthesizes 85+ variables across economic, technological, industrial, financial, resource, and demographic dimensions into a coherent assessment of where countries stand and where they're heading.
GDP measures economic output — one dimension of national capability. The GPI measures comprehensive strategic capability across multiple dimensions, including industrial capacity, technological leadership, resource security, and financial resilience. It also includes a Growth Index that captures trajectory, not just current position.
The GPI draws from authoritative intergovernmental and institutional sources including the World Bank, IMF, OECD, and specialist agencies such as the USGS and British Geological Survey. A complete data source inventory is available to clients as part of the methodology documentation.
The Standardised Level Index measures where a country stands today — its current capability and ranking. The Growth Index measures where it's heading — the rate of change and trajectory. Both are essential: a country can rank high on Level but negative on Growth (established but eroding), or lower on Level but high on Growth (building rapidly).
The 10 Specialized Indices are derived from the GPI, isolating specific dimensions of national capability: Energy Security, Water Security, Industrial Capacity, Technological Leadership, Geostrategic Positioning, Financial Resilience, Critical Minerals Security, Human Capital, Investment Attractiveness, and Economic Self-Reliance. Each includes both Level and Growth measurements.
